About me

I trained as a person-centred counsellor in 1995 and gained a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 2002. Whilst working in the NHS, I have undertaken additional training in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Mentalization Based Therapy (MBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) and in supervision. I've had a part time private practice since 2006. I also work in the NHS as a part time Principal Clinical Psychologist. I'm a Chartered member of the British Psychological Society, a member of the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) and I'm an accredited member of the EMDR UK Association. I abide by the ethical and professional guidelines of the British Psychological Society and HCPC.

I have gradually evolved my therapeutic practice into an integrative approach which is tailored to the individual's needs and their desire to improve their psychological and emotional wellbeing.

What I do

Clinical Psychology

This includes providing psychological therapies and also teaching relaxation techniques, stress management, mindfulness and visualisation. My long experience as an NHS Chartered Psychologist helps me work with a wide range of complexity, severity and type of difficulties. I have worked in older adult mental health, sexual health, medical obesity, a service for people diagnosed with personality disorders and adult mental health NHS services.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

This is a comprehensive therapy which can help in the treatment of past or recent trauma and it can also help with a range of mental health difficulties. Additionally, EMDR can help to enhance self-confidence, improve performance and increase overall well-being. If you are interested in finding out more information about this, you may find this useful. If you are interested in undertanding some of the research around this topic, you can find more information here.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy & Counselling

These are methods of therapy which lead to greater self understanding and emotional literacy. They involve talking about the person’s life both past and present and about dreams to try to understand aspects of the person’s unconscious dynamics.

Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT)

Mentalization is the ability to think about thinking. It helps to make sense of our thoughts, beliefs, wishes and feelings and to link these to our actions and behaviours. MBT helps people with long-term difficulties in relationships and helps people who experience intense emotional distress and overwhelming feelings which may result in destructive behaviours such as self-harm or aggression towards others.

Supervision

I provide clinical supervision for psychologists, psychotherapists, counsellors, and psychiatrists engaged in psychotherapeutic work - both trainees and fully qualified therapists.
